Although the Stonewall riots of NYC in 1969 are widely accepted as the birth of the modern gay rights movement, Los Angeles, previous to that time, had a vibrant LGBT community and a true activist spirit developed in response to overwhelming hostility from the government, the police department, and the culture at large.

From the personal accounts of those who were there, On These Shoulders We Stand tells the heroic stories of the individuals who stood up in the face of power and created a movement.

Winner: Outfest 2009 Special Programming Award For Freedom, for its inspiring portrayal of our LGBT elders and their immense courage.

Director: Glenne McElhinney
